Longtime scouting leader is Jefferson Award nominee

The Post and Courier
Saturday, September 6, 2008

For more than two decades Ralph Earhart of West Ashley has been a fixture in local scouting.

In May, Earhart retired as Cub Master for Pack 79, which meets at Westminster Presbyterian Church off Sam Rittenberg Boulevard. While he has stepped down from his formal commitments with the pack, he will continue to recruit leaders to work with the organization.

Earhart, 58, began his journey in scouting in his native Ironton, Ohio, where he attained the rank of first class in the Boy Scouts. He returned to scouting decades later as a den leader when his three young sons joined Cub Scouts. Earhart continued working with Pack 79 because he was good at organizing events and recruiting volunteers. In 25 years as a leader at various stages, Earhart only missed three pack meetings, he said.

“I couldn’t be a leader and miss meetings,” Earhart said.
